Data Underlying the Animation

To make the animation, seven datafiles were created.

The first is the master datafile, which contains all of the data used to make the trade flow time series that are depicted. This is an Excel Workbook with 617 worksheets, one for each of the 616 trade dyads and one that serves as a “table of contents” for the others.

The next two Excel files contain the final trade flow columns from the master file worksheets sorted by trade dyad and then by year. Number [2] contains rows for all years even if there is no data in some rows.

Number [3] includes only those rows containing import or export data.

The fourth and fifth files contain the same data as the third file except that they are sorted by year and then trade dyad. They differ in their format.

Number [4] is an Excel file.

Number [5] is a comma-separated-values (.csv) format file.

The sixth file contains the latitude and longitude data for the geographic centers of the 99 countries in .csv format and serves as the nodes file for the data visualization software.

The seventh file is a .csv listing of the numeric codes used to identify the countries. It is an extension of the COW country codes document with additional codes for countries not in that listing.

Below is a second dyadic trade nodes file that includes additional countries, those in the COW trade dataset version 3. I provide this simply to save someone who wants to use this type of data a bunch of work.
